Gonzales LA Real Estate and Homes for Sale

Gonzales, a small city in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, has a population of about 15,000. Originally named Edenborn, the name change in the 1880s reflected the prominence of two of its citizens: "Big" José Gonzales, whom the citizens elected as their sheriff; and Joseph's son, "Tee-Joe" Gonzales, who, in May of 1889, opened a post office and general store. Gonzales boundary lines were drawn and the city laid out in 1906. Gonzales was officially incorporated as a village in 1922. When the area experienced industrial growth, Governor Edwin Edwards proclaimed Gonzales a city in 1977.

Gonzales is known as the “Jambalaya Capital of the World.” Steve Juneau was a native of Avoyelles, a Louisiana Parish known for its French-speaking history and Creole traditions. Juneau, impressed by the local jambalaya, presented the idea of a jambalaya festival to the local Gonzales Lions club as a way to promote the town in 1967. In 1968, then Governor of Louisiana, John J. McKeithen, proclaimed Gonzales the “Jambalaya Capital of the World.”
